: a sweetened carbonated beverage flavored with extracts of roots (as sarsaparilla) and herbs
First known use of “root beer” – 1840
Most root beers are naturally caffeine-free; however some brands do contain caffeine. There is no standardized recipe for root beer; each brand complements the root extracts with flavorings such as vanilla, winter green, licorice root, nutmeg, anise, molasses, cinnamon, clove and honey.
